Recently, I just got myself a Fei bao 1/8 scale F-5E and had decided to convert it into an EDF jet.

I would say EDF conversion on a turbine jet airframe is nothing new nowadays and infact many have sucessfully converted theirs into E-power. Well, this is my second 120mm EDF conversion project and I believe there will be more to come. So stay tuned.

History of F-5 

The F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter and F-5E and F-5F Tiger II are part of a family of widely used light supersonic fighter aircraft, designed and built by Northrop in the United States, beginning in 1960s. Hundreds remain in service in air forces around the world in the early 21st Century, and the type has also been the basis for a number of other aircraft.

The F-5 started life as a privately-funded light fighter program by Northrop in the 1950s. The first generation F-5A Freedom Fighter entered service in the 1960s. Over 800 were produced through 1972 for U.S. allies during the Cold War. The USAF had no want for a light fighter, but it did specify a requirement for a supersonic trainer and procured about 1,200 of a derivative airframe for this purpose, the T-38 Talon.

The improved second-generation F-5E Tiger II was also primarily used by American Cold War allies and, in limited quantities, served in US military aviation as a training and aggressor aircraft; Tiger II production amounted to 1,400 of all versions, with production ending in 1987. Many F-5s continuing in service into the 1990s and 2000s have undergone a wide variety of upgrade programs to keep pace with the changing combat environment. The F-5 was also developed into a dedicated reconnaissance version, the RF-5 Tigereye.

Trail fitted and looking good. This is an ARF factory painted version and the finishing is really good.

I am using the HS 7955 TG servos for the control surfaces.

Installation of taileron servos are quite straight forward as you can see in the attached picture. Remember to drop a little thread locker.

Both taileron servos installed.

Rudder servo installed.

Insert the vertical fin into the pre-drilled holes. Bolt the fin in place with supplied washers and bolts.

I am converting this F-5E into an EDF powered jet, which means I will need to install an exhaust ducting and the area marked "X" will have to go to make way for the exhaust duct.

Grind,grind,grind and here you go.. done!

Trial fitted the exhaust duct , Mmmm.. looking good.

Nice and smooth on the inside of the straight exhaust duct.

120mm EDF. Check out the number of blades, I bet it will sounds as good as it looks in this F-5E.

Btw, I am planning to power up this moster fan with 12S set up(4-4.2kW).

Main gear door hinges are bolted instead of using epoxy to secure them in place.

Main gear door's air cylinders are being installed in place.

Reinforce the main doors bottom plate with some carbon fibre cloth.
